North Mills Stocking Dates 2006

We have traditionally as a chapter considered the North Mills River as one of our home waters.  Through the efforts of Don Bellm and others, the chapter has  stocked the North Mills.  Without these efforts, the remote and inaccessible parts of the stream would not get an even distribution of fish. Your participation is greatly appreciated in carrying out the stockings.  If you would like to participate please contact Don Bellm.

Last Stocking of the Year

November 1 - Wednesday

Meet at North Mills Campground parking lot by 10 am.

Please contact Don Bellm at:   ph: 828-687-1004 or dgbamb@charter.net  if you will be there so we will know many will be helping on that stocking day.

Fly  DIY

Do-It Yourself Strike Indicator

A lot has been written about strike indicators. The basic strike indicator serves a simple purpose of giving a visual aid for when the fish takes the nymph. There are dozens of styles and designs on the market today. Here's one you can do yourself.

Step 1. Start with a foam bait rig float. These are used by live bait fisherman to hold a minnow or a crawler off the bottom.

Step 2. Slip the foam float on your fly line.

Step 3. Set the depth and stick half a tooth pick in the top of the float.

You can also cut the foam float half way thru. This will make it possible to remove it  from the leader. Use a toothpick as previously mentioned. A wide variety of colors and sizes are out there from tackle and lure making distributors. They are less than 20˘ a indicator. If you have a Fly DIY and would like to share it please email  teachrtec2000@yahoo.com.

Enforcement of Fishing Regulations in Madison County

From April 1 - Oct 7, 2006, 979 fishermen were checked for fishing license and following regulations.  Of these, 56 received citations. For the western 12 county region, on average, 1 citation is given for every 15 fishermen checked.  Thank you to Sgt. Fullbright of the NC Wildlife Commission for providing this information.

Please visit http://www.saverockyfork.org/ for more information.  I encourage each of you  to send letters in support of no development to the email address provided on the website. Less than five percent of wild brook trout's original  habitat remains.  We need to protect what is left in order to save the wild brook trout.
