Rocky Fork Watershed Brad Sprinkle
It has recently come to my attention that the 10,000 acre Rocky
Fork watershed, located in NE Tennessee along the border with North Carolina, is
under threat of development. A group of out-of-state
developers and investors is now attempting to purchase the tract for
private development, primarily a gated residential community.
I have fished this area and several of my students also use the area
for fishing and recreation. Rocky Fork Creek has
long been recognized as a State Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, its
headwaters and tributaries providing excellent habitat for native
(and potentially threatened) Appalachian brook trout, as well as
wild rainbows. Development would have a negative impact
on the trout species and much of the prime fishing waters might be
inaccessible due to the gated development.
Please visit http://www.saverockyfork.org/ for
more information. I encourage each of you to send
letters in support of no development to the email address provided
on the website. Less than five percent of wild brook trout's
original habitat remains. We need to protect what
is left in order to save the wild brook trout.
North Mills Stocking Dates 2006 We have traditionally as a chapter considered the North Mills River as one of our home waters. Through the efforts of Don Bellm and others, the chapter has stocked the North Mills. Without these efforts, the remote and inaccessible parts of the stream would not get an even distribution of fish. Your participation is greatly appreciated in carrying out the stockings. If you would like to participate please contact Don Bellm.
October 6 - Friday November 1 - Wednesday Meet at North Mills Campground parking lot by 10 am. Please Contact Don Bellm at: dgbamb@charter.net if you will be there so we will know many will be helping on that stocking day.
