Pom-Pom Egg Tier: Brad Sprinkle
This probably one of the easiest ties that I do. Doesn't take a big amount of experience or exotic materials. It's a great pattern for the beginning tier.
Begin with a trip to the craft store for the key ingredient, pom-poms. I use 5mm most, but they do come in larger sizes and a rainbow of colors.
Slide the pom-pom onto a scud or egg fly hook. The hook should be pushed thru the center of the ball. Slide the ball back after you have the hook in the vise. Put a few wraps of thread on the hook behind the eye. This to place a drop of glue. I use brush on superglue but there are a variety of products. Use your favorite.
Slide the ball up before glue can set.
Use a permanent marker to place a contrasting yoke spot on the ball.
Eggs get a reputation as 'Junk Flies' and there are segments of the sport that snub them. I personally have no problem with the pattern when fished ethically and in compliance with the laws and regulations. Please practice catch and release. Handle the fish with care. |
